The Goal of Radon Mitigation, How Much Should it be Reduced?
The goal of radon mitigation is not complete eradication but to bring indoor levels closer to the same level experienced outdoors.
Typical ambient outdoor radon concentration averages from 0.1 to 0.4 pCi/L however, reducing to this level can be an economic challenge. Industry wide, the goal of mitigation has been to reduce indoor radon levels to less than 4.0 pCi/L.
The Environmental Protection Agency has not issued legal requirements for indoor radon levels but has issued guidance supporting the need for mitigation when radon levels are measured at 4.0 pCi/L or above.
So, what does this mean for you?
Most mitigation companies, as well as the EPA, will recommend mitigation if testing returns results of 4.0 pCi/L or higher. However, additional factors like the health of those living or working in the property, may necessitate mitigation at lower levels of radon. Common health factors may include if a tenant or homeowner is a smoker. Smoking and exposure to radon have a compounding effect potentially causing more damage than if exposed to one or the other individually.
